In Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial data can be represented in various dimensions to provide different levels of detail and realism. Two common forms of representation are 2.5D and 3D, and while they might sound similar, they have distinct differences that are crucial for GIS applications.
2.5D Representation
2.5D, or “two-and-a-half-dimensional,” is a representation where each point on the map has a unique x and y coordinate, and a corresponding elevation (z) value. However, this z-value does not fully capture the complexity of three-dimensional objects. Instead, it only adds a height value to a 2D plane. This means that, although 2.5D data can represent surface elevation, like terrain models or building heights, it cannot model features with complex vertical structures. For example, in a 2.5D model, a building would be represented as a flat surface with a single height value, but the details of the building’s vertical sides or interiors wouldn’t be captured.
3D Representation
In contrast, 3D representation in GIS provides a full three-dimensional model of spatial data. Each point has x, y, and z coordinates that allow for the modelling of complex structures, including the full volume and shape of objects. In 3D GIS, buildings, terrain, and other features can be fully rendered with accurate height, width, and depth, allowing for more realistic visualisation and analysis. This enables detailed simulations, such as visualising shadows cast by buildings or analysing the flow of water across a terrain.

• Dimensionality: 2.5D uses a single z-value per (x, y) point, creating a surface model, whereas 3D uses full (x, y, z) coordinates to model the true volume of objects.
• Complexity: 2.5D is simpler and is often used for elevation models, while 3D can handle more complex structures and scenarios.
• Applications: 2.5D is typically used in applications like topographic mapping and surface modelling. In contrast, 3D is essential for urban modelling, detailed environmental simulations, and any application requiring a full volumetric understanding of space.
